Soccer Camps - Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge - FFTW Development

Dear Parents/Guardians,

Hope you are all doing well.

Our third week is officially in the bag with our 6-7 age group working on Turns and our 8-9 and 10-12 age groups working on ground control and first touch.

Here are the coaching points below:

6-7 Age Group (Coach Rich):

Turns

- Inside Cut
- Outside Cut
- Cruyff Turn
- Drag Back

Coaching Points

- Bend your knees when going into the turn (helps you be more agile and move quicker and sharper to get away from defender)
- For specific turns, use specific when exiting to help you go quick (e.g. if you do the Cruyff with your right foot, the touch to get out and away from the defender is your left foot)
- Keep your body in between the defender the ball (if you are going to turn into the defender which means you show the defender the ball, you need to be even more sharper to get away)
- ACCELERATE AWAY!!!

8-9 and 10-12 Age Groups (Coach Ali, Coach Rich and Coach Connor):

- Use the inside of your foot to control the ball
- Your hips help you guide what direction you want to control the ball
- Open your body up on angle to receive the ball
- When creating space away from a defender, ensure the passer plays the ball right when you check in/check out as if you are just standing there the defender will react straight away to your movement
- To ensure crisp control of the ball, make sure you are controlling the middle of the ball every time to create consistency in your first touch
- Check your shoulders/look around to see where the defender is allowing you to know which direction you can take your first touch away from the defender
- Weight of touch (depending on where defender is and how fast you need to get away - assess your position)
- Use your back foot to protect the ball by getting your body in between the defender and the ball ***

6-7 Age Group (Coach Rich):

The biggest aspect for the 6-7 age group is to remember to get low when executing the turns and to remember to accelerate away after. Accelerating away was an issue with the 1 v 1 skills and it still remains the same with the turns and this is something that needs to be told to the players on repeat to ensure they get the message!

An additional point for this age group would be to remember to keep your body in between the defender and the ball so you can protect it when turning.

Well done to the group and keep practising your turns.

8-9 and 10-12 Age Groups (Coach Ali, Coach Rich and Coach Connor):

Assess your position on the field, know where your defender is before you take the touch and then measure your touch. If your defender is coming at you with pace and depending on the angle, you need to take your touch a little bit stronger so you can get away.

Never forget that you always need to keep your body in between the ball and the defender to ensure you are protecting it when taking your touch out and with the defender beside you.

Knowing what you are going to do is going to be critical in having a great touch and knowing what to do with it after. If you check your shoulders, know where the space is and where the defender is coming from, this gives you an advantage and we saw some players execute some great touches out of their feet to attack forward.

Well done to all players and see you next week!
